2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 vs 2017 Lexus GS F

Mercedes Press Release Highlights

Mercedes-AMG is redefining the performance saloon. The latest generation of the E63 4MATIC+ and the E63 S 4MATIC+ sees Mercedes-AMG introducing a number of new developments that redefine the performance saloon. Innovative powertrain engineering and maximum performance are combined with distinctive design, exclusive equipment and the latest infotainment features for comprehensive, connected multimedia applications. The brand is turning the most intelligent executive saloon into the most powerful E-Class of all time in the shape of the next generation of the E63 4MATIC+ and E63 S 4MATIC+. Mercedes-AMG is also setting new benchmarks in this market segment with its innovative technologies.

The intelligent drive strategy raises the limits of the performance saloon's vehicle dynamics to a completely new level. Delivering superior acceleration, the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine generates up to 450 kW (612 hp). This makes it the most powerful engine to have ever been installed in an E-Class. Another highlight is the completely new AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. It combines the advantages of various drive configurations. Torque distribution on the front and rear axles, which until now was strongly rear-biased, is fully variable for the first time. This ensures optimum traction right up to the physical limit, whatever the road conditions. The expressive exterior design, featuring a new radiator grille and coupé-style inset bonnet, underlines the performance figures. The next generation of the E63 thus offers a completely new level of sportiness and comfort on long journeys.
Powertrain
The advanced AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine utilises well-proven twin turbocharging, with the two chargers not located outside on the cylinder banks, but rather between them in the V of the cylinders. For maximum efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has equipped the V8 engine with the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system. Uniquely in this segment, the E63 S 4MATIC+ is fitted with dynamic engine mounts. The versatile AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine in the E63 S 4MATIC+ takes peak performance to a new level at 450 kW (612 hp). Maximum torque attains a new best value of 850 Nm. A sprint from zero to 100 km/h is absolved in 3.4 seconds, and this dynamic acceleration only ends at the governed top speed of 250 km/h (with AMG Driver's package: 300 km/h). The E63 4MATIC+ is rated at 420 kW (571 hp) and has 750 Nm of torque. This variant accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.

Both E63 models are exclusively available with the innovative AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. The transition from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive and back again is seamless, because intelligent control is integrated into the vehicle system architecture as a whole.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT nine-speed sports transmission is specially tuned to requirements in the new E63 4MATIC+ and E63 S 4MATIC+. The four different AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport Plus" and "Individual" allow drivers to extensively influence the characteristics of their E63 4MATIC+.

The control logic for the RACESTART function is new and has been simplified. All the driver has to do is press the brake pedal forcefully with their left foot and simultaneously fully depress the accelerator pedal with their right foot. The on-board electronics will now set the optimum engine speed.
Chassis
The agility and high cornering speed of the new E63 4MATIC+ and E63 S 4MATIC+ are also benefits of the completely re-engineered AMG sports suspension. It is based on the AIR BODY CONTROL fully supporting multi-chamber air suspension. A four-link front axle design uses forged aluminium components with wishbones, strut rod and spring link. The air suspension system with three chambers, a sporty spring damper set-up and continuously adjustable damping also takes the ability to individually tailor the driving experience to a new level. The complete package is compelling: The E63 4MATIC+ and E63 S 4MATIC+ combine steering precision and the highest level of longitudinal and lateral dynamics with maximum traction, while at the same time boosting ride comfort.

To improve traction and vehicle dynamics the E63 4MATIC+ has a mechanical rear differential lock and the E63 S 4MATIC+ has an electronically controlled rear differential lock. The electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering features a variable ratio on the E63 4MATIC+ and the E63 S 4MATIC+. The large-sized high-performance braking system decelerates the performance saloon reliably and quickly and is fade-resistant even under high loads. The E63 4MATIC+ has internally vented and perforated compound brake discs at the front with six-piston fixed calipers and single-piston floating brake calipers on the rear axle. The E63 S 4MATIC+ is fitted with even larger compound brake discs. For the more powerful variant, the AMG Carbon Ceramic braking system is available as an option.
Technology
The AMG instrument cluster places all the important information in the driver's field of vision. The vivid widescreen multifunction display with two monitors is part of the standard equipment for the E63 S 4MATIC+ and is available as an option for the E63 4MATIC+. Customers with a passion for motorsport will be pleased to note the RACETIMER for recording lap times on closed-off tracks. To supplement the RACETIMER, Mercedes-AMG has developed the new Mercedes me connect AMG TRACK PACE app. Customers can use it to analyse and improve their track driving style. The COMAND Online infotainment system transmits all vehicle data - including speed, gear, steering angle, time, position and temperature - to the app in real time. The smartphone app can also be connected with GoPro cameras so that the driver can obtain an interactive video of their racing experience featuring all the related data.

For the new performance saloons, all the connectivity and Intelligent Drive functions and options which make the Mercedes-Benz E-Class the most intelligent executive saloon are available. This includes semi-automated driving with the DRIVE PILOT. In addition to the standard Mercedes me connect functions such as eCall, accident recovery, breakdown assistance or after-sales service, Remote Online (standard with COMAND Online) offers numerous convenience features via smartphone. New from Mercedes me connect is the Concierge Service. The spectrum ranges from weather and stock market information and route recommendations to suggestions and reservations for sporting and cultural activities.

Lexus Press Release Highlights

The Lexus GS F performance sedan - based on the popular GS - is armed with a potent 467 horsepower (477 PS / 351 kW), 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 and excellent handling developed on the most demanding race circuits, including the legendary Nürburgring. Its elegant-yet-aggressive styling effectively characterizes the essence of Lexus' performance-oriented "F" brand, highlighted by bold front fascia with race-inspired functional air inlets, triple-beam headlamps, low-slung wide stance, large brake calipers, carbon-fiber rear spoiler and quad exhaust rear diffuser. While it's more than capable of taking on a twisty mountain road, the Lexus GS F is still a sedan that's ideal for everyday use. It seats five comfortably in a luxuriously appointed cabin filled with high-tech amenities and advanced safety technologies, including standard Lexus Safety System +.

The Lexus GS F was designed with high performance in mind; as such, aerodynamics played a key role in determining the car's exterior shape. The vehicle's overall aerodynamic efficiency has been enhanced with specially designed undertrays (beneath the engine compartment) and lateral trays (beneath the midsection of the vehicle near the rocker panels) that optimize cooling air to flow toward the rear differential. The all-new Lexus GS F has been designed to be enjoyed by all driving enthusiasts, from recreational commuters to more experienced drivers. While this 4-door doesn't forget its sedan utility, its main mission is to provide an exhilarating driving experience in a wide range of conditions.
Powertrain
The heart of the exciting new Lexus GS F is undoubtedly its naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, which has been finely tuned to deliver excellent power and responsiveness. The engine's reciprocating assembly targets lower mass with the help of lightweight forged connecting rods and titanium intake and exhaust valves, allowing it to reach a 7,300-rpm redline. In addition to producing plenty of power, the GS F's V8 is also remarkably efficient, thanks in part to the tuning of its high-pressure D-4S direct injection system (Direct injection 4-stroke gasoline engine Superior version). The V8 engine adopts Atkinson cycle to enhance fuel efficiency at cruising speeds and Otto cycle for higher performance levels when accelerating. High-performance-tuned Variable Valve Timing (VVT-iE) helps delivers 467 horsepower (477 PS / 351 kW) at 7,100 rpm and 530 Nm (389 lb.-ft.) of torque at 4,800-5,600 rpm, allowing for accelaration times of 0-60 mph in 4.5s and 0-100 km/h in 4.6s.

The Lexus GS F's V8 comes mated to an equally efficient gearbox: the 8-speed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission. Transmission performance is further enhanced with the adoption of the Lexus G force Artificial Intelligence Shift control (G AI-SHIFT). The innovative Drive Mode Select system allows for enhanced driving performance and enjoyment by allowing the driver to choose the most appropriate drive mode to match their preferred driving style and/or situation.

The available Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD) enhances dynamic performance by precisely controlling rear wheel torque. The TVD transfers torque between the right and left tires with the ideal amount based upon data including throttle input, braking, yaw rate, longitudinal and lateral G-force, and other pertinent parameters. A unique attribute of the TVD is Drive Power Control. This highly advanced system is able to finely tune torque distribution in only 1/1000th of a second.
Chassis
New parts have been developed to help maintain handling control and performance of the Lexus GS F. The double wishbone front suspension includes lightweight high-rigidity forged upper and lower aluminum control arms with exclusive coil springs, stabilizer, and bushings. The rear multi-link unit features forged aluminum control arms with increased torsional rigidity along with optimized suspension arm bushings.

The GS F's stopping power is provided by Brembo brakes that feature lightweight and high rigid opposed 6-piston aluminum mono block calipers at the front and opposed 4-piston aluminum mono block calipers at the rear. For cooling engine and transmission oil, a stylish pair of fully-functional brake duct openings has been placed in the front fascia just below the headlights and forward of the wheels at the front corners of the vehicle. The GS F's electronic power-assisted rack and pinion steering has been designed to achieve excellent dynamic performance and steering feel. Also adding distinction are available bright orange-colored front and rear brake calipers emblazoned with the Lexus "F" logo, and hand-polished 19-inch multi-spoke forged aluminum wheels manufactured using weight-reduction technology shod with low-profile 255/35ZR19 tires at the front and 275/35ZR19 tires at the rear.
Technology
In developing the audio systems for the Lexus GS F, the engineering team targeted a speaker system that replicates the sensation of sound experienced in a concert hall or movie theater. Two audio systems are available: a fully-digital 12-speaker system with a high-efficiency 299-watt amplifier, and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system with an amplifier capable of outputting the equivalent of 750 -watts that includes GreenEdge™ speaker technology.

An available Remote Touch Interface (RTI) offers intuitive functionality like that of a computer mouse. A high-resolution, high-color definition 12.3-inch Electro Multi Vision (EMV) touch-screen display allows for convenient operation and setting adjustments of a number of systems including audio, climate, telephone, navigation, etc. The navigation system allows touchscreen access to five frequently used functions as well as hands-free phone operation and, in a Lexus first, incorporates an Inrix information display that can obtain a variety of information via a mobile phone or a Wi-Fi network. The available Lexus Enform system operates in conjunction with the integrated SiriusXM® Satellite Radio receiver.
Safety
The standard Lexus Safety System + helps mitigate collisions across a wide range of vehicle speeds and conditions. It integrates several of Lexus' existing active safety technologies including: the Pre-Collision System (PCS) which uses sensors to detect sudden stops initiated by the vehicle in front, warning drivers of potential contact with obstacles ahead; Lane Departure Alert (LDA), which issues an audible signal if the vehicle strays from its intended visibly marked lane; Automatic High Beam (AHB) that helps provide optimal forward visibility during nighttime driving; and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). The AL-TPWS monitors tire pressure at each individual wheel and alerts the driver if a tire has low air pressure. Employing a quasi-millimeter wave radar installed on the back of the vehicle, the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) can detect a vehicle present in adjacent lanes. Working in concert with the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), the Rear Cross Traffic Alert/Rear Crossing Traffic Alert (RCTA) alerts the driver to objects approaching the rear-side of the vehicle. The Rear View Monitor System and the intuitive parking assist/ Lexus parking assist-sensor helps the driver to back into and out of parking spaces.

Every Lexus GS F model features a comprehensive Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that includes dual-stage driver's and front passenger's dual-stage airbags, driver's and front passenger's knee airbags, front side airbags, front and rear seat side curtain airbags and rear side airbags. An advanced security system that includes security alarm control with an ultrasonic break-in sensor and tilt sensor.
