2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 vs 2017 Mercedes-AMG E63

Mercedes-AMG Press Release Highlights

Mercedes-AMG is setting a further landmark in the brand history: the new C63 Coupé is the next step on the way to yet more technical and visual distinctiveness. The far-reaching technical modifications are evident at first sight: strikingly flared front and rear wheel arches, an increased track width and larger wheels give the Coupé a muscular look while at the same time providing a basis for the highly agile longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The brand's typical "Driving Performance" is taken to new heights also with the C63 Coupé. The AMG 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine with 350 kW (476 hp) or 375 kW (510 hp) is just as much a completely in-house development from Affalterbach as, for example, the sophisticated AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers, the set-up of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, the rear-axle limited-slip differential or the dynamic engine mounts. The C-Class is Mercedes-AMG's best-selling model series and forms the backbone of the company's success.

The Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupé already fascinates at first glance with its impressive proportions. The expressive exterior design differs significantly from the Mercedes-Benz model, which shares merely the same doors, roof and boot lid. The powerful 8-cylinder engine, together with the increased track width on the front and rear axles, calls for a redesigned front end and a model-specific rear assembly as well as new side walls. The extremely wide front section is characterized by large air inlets and precisely positioned flics. The low, arrow-shaped "twin blade" radiator grille with AMG lettering visually lowers the vehicle's center of gravity.
The C63 S Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, the C63 Coupé in 4.0 seconds. This makes the Coupé just a fraction faster than the Saloon - thanks to the wider tires and shorter-legged rear-axle ratios. The top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited; 290 km/h with AMG Driver's Package). The 4.0-litre 8-cylinder bi-turbo engine is already used in the C63 Saloon and the C63 Estate. It is also installed in the GT sports car with dry sump lubrication. Characteristic feature: the two turbochargers are positioned not on the outside of the cylinder banks, but between them in the "V".

The typical V8 engine sound was likewise a key development goal. It was specially tailored to the Coupé. A model-specific exhaust system with flap technology is used as standard. It is automatically map-controlled depending on the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode, the power demanded by the driver and the engine speed. The engine sound varies between discreet/suitable for long-distance driving and robust/emotively appealing. Optionally available is the Performance exhaust system, which allows the sound to be modulated at the press of a button.

The transmission plays a major part in the direct and sporty character of the new Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupé. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission impresses with its tailor-made dynamics and high variability. Whether automatic or initiated by the driver using the steering wheel shift paddles, upshifts and downshifts are executed noticeably faster than in the previous model.

Unique in its segment, the C63 S Coupé - like the Saloon and the Estate - is equipped with dynamic engine mounts. These help to further resolve the conflicting aims of comfort and dynamic performance. These dynamic mounts are instantly and variably able to adapt their stiffness to the driving conditions and requirements. Soft engine mounts improve comfort, as they provide more effective decoupling of noise and vibration. However, handling and agility benefit from a generally stiffer mount set-up.
The fascinating agility and high cornering speed of the C63 Coupé are also thanks to the completely redesigned suspension. A four-link front suspension with radial, racing-style brake connections is used. Model-specific steering knuckles and a wider track allow greater lateral acceleration. The rear axle, too, was completely newly developed for the Coupé. The multi-link concept impresses with highly precise wheel control and increased stiffness. The AMG-specific rear axle carrier makes the increased track width possible. Other measures include AMG-specific wheel carriers, stiffer elastokinematic tuning and higher negative camber. With the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adjustable damping, the customer can choose between maximum sportiness and excellent long-distance comfort in three stages at the press of a button. The difference between the comfortable and sporty suspension settings is also subjectively perceptible - depending on the particular driving situation.

For improved traction and vehicle dynamics, the C63 Coupé is provided with a mechanical rear-axle limited-slip differential, while the C63 S Coupé comes with an electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential. Both differentials reduce the slip on the inside wheel when cornering, without control interventions in the braking system. This allows the driver to accelerate out of corners earlier thanks to the improved traction. The car remains more stable when braking from high speeds, and the limited-slip differential also improves traction when moving off. The greatest benefit of the electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential - installed as standard on the C63 S - is the even more sensitive and faster control, which further raises the critical limit of drivability.
The driver is able to influence the characteristics of the C63 with four different AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes. The C63 S has an additional "Race" transmission mode. There is therefore scope for maximum individualization. The driver decides on the desired driving experience, from comfortable-economical to super-sporty, using a controller to the left of the touchpad. The driver can choose between various preconfigured transmission modes and an "Individual" mode that the driver can to a large extent personally configure.
The Coupé also offers a supreme level of safety. It comes as standard with the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which helps to prevent rear-end collisions. Many other optional assistance systems are available to increase both comfort and safety.

Mercedes-AMG Press Release Highlights

Mercedes-AMG is redefining the performance saloon. The latest generation of the E63 4MATIC+ and the E63 S 4MATIC+ sees Mercedes-AMG introducing a number of new developments that redefine the performance saloon. Innovative powertrain engineering and maximum performance are combined with distinctive design, exclusive equipment and the latest infotainment features for comprehensive, connected multimedia applications. The brand is turning the most intelligent executive saloon into the most powerful E-Class of all time in the shape of the next generation of the E63 4MATIC+ and E63 S 4MATIC+. Mercedes-AMG is also setting new benchmarks in this market segment with its innovative technologies.

The intelligent drive strategy raises the limits of the performance saloon's vehicle dynamics to a completely new level. Delivering superior acceleration, the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine generates up to 450 kW (612 hp). This makes it the most powerful engine to have ever been installed in an E-Class. Another highlight is the completely new AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. It combines the advantages of various drive configurations. Torque distribution on the front and rear axles, which until now was strongly rear-biased, is fully variable for the first time. This ensures optimum traction right up to the physical limit, whatever the road conditions. The expressive exterior design, featuring a new radiator grille and coupé-style inset bonnet, underlines the performance figures. The next generation of the E63 thus offers a completely new level of sportiness and comfort on long journeys.
The advanced AMG 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine utilizes well-proven twin turbocharging, with the two chargers not located outside on the cylinder banks, but rather between them in the V of the cylinders. For maximum efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has equipped the V8 engine with the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system. Uniquely in this segment, the E63 S 4MATIC+ is fitted with dynamic engine mounts. The versatile AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine in the E63 S 4MATIC+ takes peak performance to a new level at 450 kW (612 hp). Maximum torque attains a new best value of 850 Nm. A sprint from zero to 100 km/h is absolved in 3.4 seconds, and this dynamic acceleration only ends at the governed top speed of 250 km/h (with AMG Driver's package: 300 km/h). The E63 4MATIC+ is rated at 420 kW (571 hp) and has 750 Nm of torque. This variant accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.

Both E63 models are exclusively available with the innovative AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. The transition from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive and back again is seamless, because intelligent control is integrated into the vehicle system architecture as a whole.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT nine-speed sports transmission is specially tuned to requirements in the new E63 4MATIC+ and E63 S 4MATIC+. The four different AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport Plus" and "Individual" allow drivers to extensively influence the characteristics of their E63 4MATIC+.

The control logic for the RACESTART function is new and has been simplified. All the driver has to do is press the brake pedal forcefully with their left foot and simultaneously fully depress the accelerator pedal with their right foot. The on-board electronics will now set the optimum engine speed.
The agility and high cornering speed of the new E63 4MATIC+ and E63 S 4MATIC+ are also benefits of the completely re-engineered AMG sports suspension. It is based on the AIR BODY CONTROL fully supporting multi-chamber air suspension. A four-link front axle design uses forged aluminum components with wishbones, strut rod and spring link. The air suspension system with three chambers, a sporty spring damper set-up and continuously adjustable damping also takes the ability to individually tailor the driving experience to a new level. The complete package is compelling: The E63 4MATIC+ and E63 S 4MATIC+ combine steering precision and the highest level of longitudinal and lateral dynamics with maximum traction, while at the same time boosting ride comfort.

To improve traction and vehicle dynamics the E63 4MATIC+ has a mechanical rear differential lock and the E63 S 4MATIC+ has an electronically controlled rear differential lock. The electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering features a variable ratio on the E63 4MATIC+ and the E63 S 4MATIC+. The large-sized high-performance braking system decelerates the performance saloon reliably and quickly and is fade-resistant even under high loads. The E63 4MATIC+ has internally vented and perforated compound brake discs at the front with six-piston fixed calipers and single-piston floating brake calipers on the rear axle. The E63 S 4MATIC+ is fitted with even larger compound brake discs. For the more powerful variant, the AMG Carbon Ceramic braking system is available as an option.
The AMG instrument cluster places all the important information in the driver's field of vision. The vivid widescreen multifunction display with two monitors is part of the standard equipment for the E63 S 4MATIC+ and is available as an option for the E63 4MATIC+. Customers with a passion for motorsport will be pleased to note the RACETIMER for recording lap times on closed-off tracks. To supplement the RACETIMER, Mercedes-AMG has developed the new Mercedes me connect AMG TRACK PACE app. Customers can use it to analyze and improve their track driving style. The COMAND Online infotainment system transmits all vehicle data - including speed, gear, steering angle, time, position and temperature - to the app in real time. The smartphone app can also be connected with GoPro cameras so that the driver can obtain an interactive video of their racing experience featuring all the related data.

For the new performance saloons, all the connectivity and Intelligent Drive functions and options which make the Mercedes-Benz E-Class the most intelligent executive saloon are available. This includes semi-automated driving with the DRIVE PILOT. In addition to the standard Mercedes me connect functions such as eCall, accident recovery, breakdown assistance or after-sales service, Remote Online (standard with COMAND Online) offers numerous convenience features via smartphone. New from Mercedes me connect is the Concierge Service. The spectrum ranges from weather and stock market information and route recommendations to suggestions and reservations for sporting and cultural activities.
